It's clear something is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their career performing shows at local delicatessens with their family. Now they're multi-time Grammy Award hopefuls.

In the tradition of the most iconic groups, they're a close trio. Their videos frequently feature them walking in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. In concert, they jam with such pure happiness you can't help but think, "I wish to be involved in that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that young girls came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I bought a drum kit'," says Alana, the most junior of the trio. "That is the greatest honour. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire young girls to make music."

Award Nod

The group have called into their homes, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in for their new album, I Quit.

They're right now processing the news it's been nominated for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-female band ever in contention for the award.

"I follow the lists every year, so it sort of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," says Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The weight of the nomination is deeply felt by the sisters.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge achievement," says Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the pioneers that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Humour

The album emerged from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that odd liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to move on.

The words track departures and goodbyes. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them determining in the moment who they aspire to be.

"I adore way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to actively work on blocking the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Style

That recent resilience demanded a new sound – more unpolished and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the drum sound.

"Drums are such a specific thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Humor

The trio's candor shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their romantic horror stories.

A former partner left Este over a health consideration. Alana recalled a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"When you're going through these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no hope," notes Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Future

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their standing in the rock pantheon.

They're festival headliners, with successful albums and an global audience.

But the sister act will consistently be their primary commitment.

"We have been making music since I was a young child," says Alana. "There is no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still kicking."
