Countless followers congregated on roadways from sunrise, with mayhem erupting when enormous throng breached a gate at Nairobi's main stadium, causing soldiers to discharge weapons upward.

Aviation Hub Incident and Government Building Situation

Earlier in the day, thousands of mourners momentarily entered the capital's aviation hub, disrupting a ceremony where President William Ruto and government representatives were welcoming Odinga's corpse with formal recognition.

This situation led to a temporary halt of airport operations.

Crowds also occupied surrounding thoroughfares and attempted to breach parliament, where the authorities had initially planned the community homage.

Political Heritage and Community Backing

Though mainly known as an government critic, Odinga served as senior minister in 2008 and also established a political pact with the president last year in a public service marked by shifting alliances.

He inspired strong loyalty among adherents, particularly in his Luo community based in the country's west, many of whom contend he was denied the presidency by electoral fraud.

Many of Odinga's mourners, who were unborn in 1991 when Kenya established itself as a pluralistic political system, offered homage to Odinga's work as an advocate.
